Woven Waves: The Jutland Tapestries Events Programme

February – March 2020

Scottish Maritime Museum

Harbour Road, Irvine

A talk by the grandson of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe who commanded the Grand Fleet at the largest naval battle in history, the Battle of Jutland, will be one of the highlights of the Scottish Maritime Museum’s new Woven Waves Events Programme.

The events programme complements award-winning tapestry artist Katie Russell’s exhibition Woven Waves: The Jutland Tapestries currently on show at the Scottish Maritime Museum on Harbour Road, Irvine.

Through the exhibition, Katie weaves together naval history, ground-breaking technology and art to explore the 1916 battle during which over 250 ships and 100,000 men clashed off the west coast of Denmark’s Jutland peninsula.

The exhibition also features extraordinary high resolution shipwreck images captured during the 2016 Battle of Jutland Centenary nautical archaeology expedition and on show in Scotland for the first time.

Other Woven Wave events include a weaving workshop and guided tour by Katie and a family fun weaving session.

The event programme kicks off with Woven Waves: Weaving Waves on a Loom! Make & Take Family Session on Saturday 8 February.

The drop in session, which is also part of the Museum’s February Family Fun crafting sessions for the school holidays, runs 11am – 3pm with activities taking around 30 minutes to complete.

Children 5 years and over will enjoy using cardboard looms to make tapestry pictures of crashing waves!

As usual, up to three children go FREE with each adult admission to the Museum.

Woven Waves: Jutland: The Unfinished Battle Talk by Nick Jellicoe will take place 2pm – 4pm on Saturday 14 March.

During the talk, historian, author and regular TV and radio presenter Nick Jellicoe will describe the Battle of Jutland from his unique perspective.

After the talk, Nick, whose father George Jellicoe was the last man to hold the post of First Lord of the Admiralty, will stay for a signing of his books Jutland: The Unfinished Battle and The Last Days of the High Seas Fleet: From Mutiny to Scapa Flow. The books are currently available for purchase in the Museum bookshop.

Tickets £8.50 Adults and £6.50 Concessions including entry to the Museum and Woven Waves: The Jutland Tapestries exhibition.

The Woven Waves: Katie Russell Tapestry Weaving Workshop will take place 11am – 4pm on Saturday 28 March.

Participants 16 years and over will learn about different types of tapestry weaving and the rich variety of materials used in this ancient craft before creating their own piece of tapestry art.

Tickets £20 Full Price and £15 Concessions including entry to the Museum and Woven Waves: The Jutland Tapestries exhibition.

Katie Russell will also lead the final event, Woven Waves: The Battle of Jutland Artist Guided Tour at 2pm on Sunday 29 March.

During the tour, which marks the close of her poignant exhibition, Katie will share the motivations behind the project, her use of maritime history within her tapestry weaves and why she feels the Battle of Jutland still resonates with us today.

Tickets £8.50 Adults and £6.50 Concessions.
