A lively and creative ‘Trashion Show’ will hit the runway at the Scottish Maritime Museum on Irvine Harbourside at 6pm on Wednesday 13 August to showcase all the eco-inspired fashion creations from the ‘Trashion’ exhibition and summer workshops.
The fun and free event is the brainchild of the intergenerational community group which came together to curate the ‘Trashion’ exhibition, a collection of wearable art made from waste especially plastics that might otherwise end up in our oceans or landfill to spark conversation about ocean pollution.
After co-curating the exhibition, the group from Irvine Seniors Forum, Discovery Group and Irvine Youth Legacy Centre decided to bring the fashion art to life in style — with a full-blown catwalk celebration!
To involve more people in the ‘Trashion Show’, the group then helped the Museum lead a series of hands-on summer workshops, inviting locals to create more fashion art highlighting the harm done by fast fashion and the small positive changes we can all make in our daily lives to help care for our oceans.
As part of the evening celebration, members of the community group will be presented with a Heritage Heros award by Barry Fisher, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, which partnered with the Museum to support skills development during the project.
Barry Fisher will also give a short talk on the marine pollution emergency.

Over the past few years, we’ve been exploring creative and meaningful ways to help members of our local community who want to get involved in climate and ocean action. This year’s ‘Trashion’ project has been our biggest yet — and it’s been amazing to see people of all ages come together.
“The ‘Trashion Show’ will be a joyful celebration of everyone’s creativity, commitment and care for our oceans. Each outfit is not just a fashion statement but a conversation starter — a bold reminder of how our everyday choices shape the world we live in.”
As well as seeing the ‘Trashion’ exhibition, visitors attending the show can also dive into the Museum’s summer exhibition, ‘Beneath the Waves’. The exhibition features award-winning underwater photography, delicate marine illustrations and historic pottery salvaged from a shipwreck off Arran.
Visitors can also make their own pledge for the planet. As a proud member of the global ‘Agency for World Change’ initiative, the Museum invites everyone to add their personal pledge to a World Change Agreement — a simple but powerful way of committing to small, sustainable changes in daily life.
The ‘Trashion’ project has been made possible with grant support from Museums Galleries Scotland and the additional support of environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful and their Our Heritage, Our Future programme.
The Our Heritage, Our Future programme works with communities across Scotland to explore, record and protect their heritage, and to take action locally on the impacts of climate change.
