POLISH SINGING SAILORS, A TITANIC DISCOVERY SESSION AND ’THE BELOVED, THE DAMNED, THE FORGOTTEN’….

GETS SET FOR BUMPER WEEK OF EVENTS

SCOTTISH MARITIME MUSEUM, HARBOUR ROAD, IRVINE

The Scottish Maritime Museum on Irvine Harbourside gets set for a bumper week of events beginning this Monday (31st July) with an evening of music with ZAWISZA CZARNY, which is believed to be the largest, regularly performing sea shanty choir in the world.

Comprised of ‘singing sailors’ and members of the Polish Navy, submarine units, Coast Guard and fishermen, all of who have a love of the sea and singing, ZAWISZA CZARNY will raise the rafters in the Linthouse from 7.30pm – 9pm on Monday for their only performance on the West Coast of Scotland this year.

During their visit to the Scottish Maritime Museum, ZAWISZA CZARNY will berth their vessel, STS Kapitan Borchardt, at Clyde Marina, Ardrossan.

On Saturday (5 August) the Museum will shine a light on RMS Titanic with a Family Discovery Session and an evening talk.

The ‘It was fine when it left us’, RMS Titanic Discovery Session will run from 1.30pm – 3pm on Saturday.

During the session, everyone will explore the fascinating history of the RMS Titanic, one of the most famous ocean liners of all time.

As well as learning about the ship’s construction, the crew and passengers, visitors will hear what happened on that fateful night in the North Atlantic Ocean before enjoying some STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) experiments related to the vessel’s construction.

The evening talk – ‘The Beloved, the Damned, the Forgotten’ will focus in on the ‘super ships’ of the White Star Line – RMS Titanic, HMHS Britannic and RMS Olympic – and their place in maritime history.

Doors will open at 6pm with a Cocktail or Mocktail on arrival included in the ticket price as well as the opportunity to enjoy the Museum’s current exhibition, ‘Dream Destination’ , before the talk begins at 7pm.

Both of Saturday’s events will be delivered by Bill Fitzpatrick, a retired history teacher, Kilmarnock and District History Group member and maritime history enthusiast.

Eva Bukowska, Exhibitions and Events Officer at the Scottish Maritime Museum, says:

We are thrilled to welcome the amazing ZAWISZA CZARNY to the Scottish Maritime Museum. The choir is made up of a diverse and talented group of individuals so it will be an exciting, authentic and unmissable performance.

“The two events with Bill Fitzpatrick will also be fascinating. Bill has delivered talks across Ayrshire for many years and his passion shows through in his remarkable and thoroughly researched presentations.”
