Working Voices
In 2018-2019 the National Lottery Heritage Fund through the “Garnock Connections” scheme funded the recording of oral histories from people who remembered working life in Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Irvine and surrounding areas in North Ayrshire. A former centre of maritime industry in Scotland, you can hear short clips from some of the interviews here:
Denny-built ship Markland, After Dinner Speeches 1953
A rare survivor, we recently digitised some recordings of the after dinner speeches from the launch celebrations of the ship Markland, built for the Liverpool Newspaper Company. It includes recordings of the Denny family. We know that the speakers include Maurice Edward Denny, a “J Denny”, Captain Copelin, and the ship’s Godmother.
We are not sure who is who on the below recordings, or even that they are in the right order! If you have any thoughts don’t hesitate to contact us on social media or email our Assistant Curator james@scotmaritime.org.uk with your thoughts.
