Project Assistant: Garnock Connections ‘Working Voices’ Oral History Project

Temporary 12 month part-time contract (22 hours)

Salary: £8.75 (per hour)

Location: Irvine

The Scottish Maritime Museum is looking to recruit a Project Assistant based at the Museum in Irvine to work with the Assistant Curator on the oral history project ‘Working Voices’ run in partnership with Garnock Connections. The project will collect maritime histories from the Garnock Valley coast and provide training and support for other oral history projects run under the Garnock Connections banner. Garnock Connections is a Landscape Partnership Scheme led by RSPB in partnership with North Ayrshire Council, Historic Environment Scotland (HES), Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), and the Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT).


  • To assist with the recruitment and management of volunteers to record oral histories.
  • To assist with the research of the industrial and local history of the local area to identify subjects of interest.
  • To assist with the networking with local groups and individuals to recruit interviewees.
  • To assist with the transcribing and proper archiving of recordings and associated material.
  • To prepare material from the recordings for special exhibitions, loan exhibitions and other displays as required.
  • To work in all such locations as required for the effective performance of the duties of Project Assistant.
  • To assist in the delivery of training sessions for organisations and individuals in the area keen to undertake their own programme of recordings.

The successful candidate will have an organised and methodical approach to your work, with an eye for detail. You will also have the ability to prioritise tasks, work independently, and to use your own initiative. Essential to this role is that you must be able to multi-task and work in a demanding environment and have strong interpersonal skills.
