A collection of striking and poignant textile panels challenging us to open our eyes to people, places and creatures threatened by growing environmental breakdown, opens at the Scottish Maritime Museum (Denny Tank) on Castle Street, Dumbarton, on Saturday 25 September.
The 60 touching and celebratory textile panels in the exhibition have been selected from among those created through the Loving Earth Project, a global community initiative which began in 2019.
To celebrate the exhibition opening, and as part of the Scottish Climate Fringe Week, the Museum will host two free drop in textile workshops on launch day. The workshops will run 11am – 1pm and 1.30pm – 3.30pm on Saturday 25 September.
Through the Loving Earth’s ongoing community textile project, people around the world are invited to look at something, someone or somewhere that they themselves know and love but which is endangered by environmental breakdown and climate change issues, such as coastal erosion, the melting polar icecaps, species extinctions and the decline of the bee population.
The participants then look at how their lifestyle contributes to that threat and, ultimately, what they and we could do, or are doing, to help reduce that threat.
The resulting textile panels explore varying environmental issues and challenge everyone to consider how we use the Earth’s resources and become advocates and positive examples of change.
The panels in this innovative touring exhibition have been created by people living in countries including Scotland, France and Uganda.
Announcing the opening of the Loving Earth Project, Nicola Scott, Exhibition and Events Officer at the Scottish Maritime Museum, says:
“This global textile community project is very personal and local. It’s a fascinating and moving look at the big environmental issues we face from the personal perspective of individuals and communities dealing with the impact day to day.
“The images inspire people to make connections, change their habits and live more sustainably. This is an exhibition for people of all ages who are interested in our planet.”
The Loving Earth Project exhibition is also part of the Scottish Climate Fringe Week.
The Climate Fringe Week (18-26 September) aims to raise awareness of the need to move towards a greener, fairer, low carbon society and highlights the need for urgent action as we look towards COP26, the United Nations climate talks in Glasgow this November.
Other groups of panels from The Loving Earth Project will also be on display in Glasgow and other parts of Scotland in Autumn for COP26 and elsewhere thereafter.
The exhibitions are supported by the Quaker Arts Network, with financial support from the Westhill Endowment and the Edith M Ellis Trust.
The Loving Earth Project exhibition is included in Museum admission.
