The Scottish Maritime Museum on Irvine Harbourside has launched a series of FREE summer workshops in association with the community co-produced exhibition currently running at the leading visitor attraction.
The new workshops are based on the themes of the ‘Trashion’ exhibition, which features ‘fashion art’ pieces created using rubbish to explore the marine pollution emergency caused by industry, fast fashion and our own personal choices.
The workshops take place every Wednesday from 9 July to 6 August and participants can make their own hat, fascinator, or other accessory out of recyclables and other materials that would otherwise end up in the bin.
At the end of the summer series, on Wednesday 13th August, the community group and Museum will host a ‘Trashion Show’ to showcase all the creations.
The Trashion exhibition, which also invites everyone to think about the small changes we can all make, has been curated by a group from Irvine Seniors Forum and Discovery Group and Irvine Youth Legacy Centre with the support of the Museum team.

The Trashion workshops are a great opportunity to have some fun, fire your creativity and help raise awareness of marine pollution and the harm it is doing to our planet.
“The workshops are free to attend, and all materials are provided, but places are limited and must be booked in advance so we recommend reserving a place as soon as possible.”
The Trashion Workshops are suitable for ages 6 years and above. Under 12s must be accompanied by an adult.

It is recommended that participants book at least two workshops to allow time to get really creative.
Trashion’ has been made possible with grant support from Museums Galleries Scotland and the additional support of environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful and their Our Heritage, Our Future programme.
The ‘Trashion’ exhibition runs until 3 August.
The Museum’s Summer exhibition, ‘Beneath the Waves’, which also runs over the Summer, explores the extraordinary world beneath the ocean’s surface with award-winning underwater photography, exquisite marine sketches and rare Glasgow Pottery recovered from a shipwreck off Arran last year.
‘Beneath the Waves’ has been curated in collaboration with renowned underwater photographer, marine conservationist and writer Lawson Wood; diver and maritime explorer Graeme Bruce; and Ayrshire underwater artist and writer Christina Riley.
