One of the sculptures in our art collection is Pelorus Pisces by Will Maclean.
The name Pelorus refers to a navigating device which is used at sea and Pisces is the star sign which is used in navigation and the fishing industry in general. The artwork contains a glass fronted box containing pieces of objects like seabird bones and baleen that you might find at the coastline. Some whales have baleen instead of teeth which they use to collect and sieve krill, plankton and small fish to eat. It is made from keratin which is the same as our fingernails and hair.
Here is Beach Scavenger Hunt you can use the next time you are near the coast to find you own treasures to display or photograph.
