‘60 Years Underwater’ Talk By Award-Winning Underwater Photographer Lawson Wood

Award-winning underwater photographer, marine conservationist and writer Lawson Wood will give a talk at the Scottish Maritime Museum on Irvine Harbourside at 6pm on Saturday 7 and 6pm Sunday 8 June.
During his talk, ’60 Years Underwater’, Lawson will chart the early days of marine conservation up to his work co-founding the UK’s largest marine conservation area, the Berwickshire Marine Reserve.
Lawson, who was born near the sea in Eyemouth, in the Scottish Borders, enjoyed his first scuba dive aged 11 years. His growing passion soon turned into a profession.
Lawson’s talks will take place during the opening weekend of ‘Beneath the Waves’, the Museum’s major summer exhibition which features a selection of his photograph
Guests at the talk can take in the new exhibition and view Lawson’s images which together reveal the captivating world of marine life and range from colourful tropical fish and seals to corals and anemone.
Those attending the talks will also a receive a complimentary signed print of a sea anemone or seal.
Visitors can now also purchase three of Lawson’s books in the Museum Giftshop – ‘Marine Life of the North Sea and English Channel’, ‘Scapa Flow 100th Anniversary Edition’ and ‘The Bull and the Barriers (The Wrecks of Scapa Flow)’.

Beneath the Waves

‘Beneath the Waves’ celebrates the extraordinary world below the ocean’s surface.
As well as Lawson’s stunning underwater photography, the exhibition features rare ceramic bowls recovered from the wreck of the 1857 iron steamship SS Eagle off Arran, by Oban-based diver and maritime explorer Graeme Bruce; and photographs and dotwork pencil drawings by Ayrshire underwater artist and writer Christina Riley.

Dive In Day

To celebrate the opening of ‘Beneath the Waves’ and the upcoming World Ocean Day, the Museum will also host ‘Dive-In’, a free day of activities on Saturday 7 June.
Highlights will include a sustainability fair; ‘Trashion’ – a community exhibition exploring the damage being done to the planet through fast fashion; a pop-up repair shop and short, guided cycle tours led by Active Travel.
