2011-2012 Schools Education Programme The Scottish Maritime Museum is based in the West of Scotland, with sites in both Irvine and Dumbarton. The Museum has a strong maritime connection and holds an important nationally recognised and varied collection of historic ships, artefacts, shipbuilding machinery, machine tools, several small vessels, canoes, lifeboats and other fascinating personal items. Many of these can be found inside the Linthouse Building in Irvine, a unique Grade A listed, 19th Century historic building known as the Linthouse Engine Shop ‘Cathedral of Engineering’.
A visit to our Irvine site also includes a tour to the Shipyard workers’ tenement flat, restored to its pre-1920’s appearance and a tour of our historic vessel, M.V.Kyles, moored at the Harbourside.
